Abstract

Abstract: The abili ty to enter the global market has become a competitive necessity for many firms a nd one important for survival and growth in the era of globalization. At the same time, digitalizatio n is transforming the locus of enlr epre ne un al opportunities and entrepr eneun al practices, thus oflering n ew persp relives on internationaliza ion. when enter ng the global market, SMEs will require innovative ness cap ab ility, pro acriveness, and risk-taking. However, there i s a gap in the lileralure exploring the interplay of digi lalizalio n and e nlrepreneurial orientation in the internalionalizalion prccess. The objective of the present study aims at develo ping insights that expl ain how SMEs in SI awi district in the metal and m achinery industry can use the tactics and strategies associated with EO to achieve sup erior performance in the digitalizarion age. Results ffo m a survey in 63 SMEs show that: 1 ) SMEs that display high levels of EO report a higher level of performance, 2) SMEs th at display high levels of digitalization report a higher level of EO, 3) the relationship between EO and performance is mode rated by digitalization and 4) the relationship between digitalization and performance is moderated by EO. These results indicate that for those firms, innovative nes s capability, risk-taking, and proactive nes s are crucial to their success in foreign markets. Instead, SMEs should develop a clear vision of digitalization that is characterized by innovation, being ahead of the compe tition, and a willingness to take risks.
