Abstract
ABSTRACT Lagho, Maria Rosario Fatima. 2022. The Use of Translation Techniques in Translating Culture-Specific Words in Andrea Hirata’s The Rainbow Troops. Undergraduate Thesis, English Literature Study Program. Faculty of Language and Literature. Flores University. Advisor I: Gratiana Sama, S.Pd., M.Hum., Advisor II: Maksimilianus Doi, S.S., M.Pd. This study describes the use of translation techniques in translating culture-specific words. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The main data of this study was taken from the novel The Rainbow Troops which is a novel translated from the original version in Indonesian Laskar Pelangi written by Andrea Hirata and translated by Angie Kilbane. The results show that the most widely used translation techniques in translating culturespecific words are borrowing and amplification techniques which are also the most suitable techniques to achieve equivalence of meaning between the source language and the target language. In addition, the use of a combination of techniques is also considered valuable in translating culture-specific words. However, there is also the use of several techniques that are considered less suitable for translating these words.
