Abstract

ABSTRAK Nirmala, Maria Magdalena. 2022. Racism In Green Book Film by Peter Farrely: Sociological Approach. Faculty of Language and Literature. Flores University. Advisors: Febe. F. Irawati Wanggai, S.S.,M. Hum & Maksimilianus Doi, S.S.,M. Pd. This undergraduate thesis entitled “Racism In Green Book Film by Peter Farrely: Sociological Approach” The writer formulates three problems for this thesis. The first formulated problem discusses the depiction of Shirley characteristics. The second formulated problem what racist acts do by white people to Shirley. The third formulated problem the impacts of racism to Shirley in the Green Book film. The research design used by the writer was qualitative research method. This research use two theories to analyze the data racism from Kamaldeep Bhui and theory Characterization from Boogs & Petrie, sociological approach is also used in this study. The writer uses library research to find the theories and the data which are required for this thesis. Primary data consist video of the film. Secondary data consist of books, artikel, journal and dictrionary. The result of this study answered three main problems. First, Shirley characteristics are cultured, patient and brave. There are two types of racist acts depicted in the Green Book film: personal racism and institutional racism. Both types occur between individuals and society. Third, the impact of racist actions, experienced by the main character in this film: mental conditions such as mental disorders and physical conditions such as criminal acts against black people.
