Abstract

ABSTRACT Mogi, Maria Anggita. (2022). Speech Function of Selected Topics in the First 2020 American Presidential Debate. Undergraduate Thesis. English Literature Study Program. Faculty of Language and Literature. Flores University. Advisor: Dr. Simon Sira Padji, M.A., Gratiana Sama, S.Pd. M.Hum. Speech function is important as basic speech role of giving and demanding something depending on the context and situation. Based on the theory led by Halliday, there are four types of speech function; offer, command, statement, and question. The purposes of this research were to determine, describe, and find out the types of speech functions used by speakers, especially the candidates and the moderator in the first 2020 American presidential debate. This research used qualitative and quantitative descriptive research. Data were taken from the utterances produced by chosen sample data from three topics selected of the debate. The method used was video observation. The result of the research shows that the candidates and the moderator use all types of speech function; initial and response, which is counted using the formula by Sudijono. 1) offer are 19 utterances with 3,88%, the response found acceptance are 10 utterances with 2,04% and rejection are 7 utterances with 1,43%. 2) command are 65 utterances with 13,27%, the response found undertaking are 3 utterances with 0,61% and refusal are 12 utterances with 2,44%. 3) statement are 168 utterances with 34,29%, the response found thatacknowledgment are 31 utterances with 6,33% and contradiction are 67 utterances with 13,67%. And 4) question are 66 utterances with 13,47%, the response found answer are 24 utterances with 4,90% and disclaimer are 18 utterances with 3,67%. The most frequent type of initial speech function used is statement, and the response is contradiction. The researcher concludes that in a debate, the function of statement and contradiction is used to defend the argument and bring down the opposing team with the aim to get the sympathy of the audience.
